Step-by-step

How to get out of negative equity on a car

Getting right-side up on a car loan is usually a matter of time, accurate numbers and avoiding moves that make the gap bigger. Here's a practical order of operations.

Step 1: Get your real payoff

Call your lender or check their website for a 10-day payoff quote. It includes interest accrued since your last statement, so it's usually higher than the balance you see on your bill. Write down the good-through date.

Step 2: Find out what your car is really worth

Online estimates are a starting point. A written purchase offer, such as an instant offer from CarMax.com or Carvana.com, is closer to what a buyer will actually pay. Offers can still change after an in-person inspection, so collect more than one.

Step 3: Calculate the gap

Payoff minus your best written offer equals your estimated negative equity. If the number is small, time and normal payments may close it on their own. If it's large, you'll need a plan.

Step 4: Stop the gap from growing

Step 5: Shrink the balance

Even modest extra principal payments help, because they cut the balance and the interest charged on it. Ask your lender how to apply extra payments to principal. A lower-rate refinance can help too, but compare total interest, not just the new payment.

Example (illustrative only)

Paying an extra $150 a month toward principal on a $6,500 gap reduces it by about $1,800 in a year, before counting interest savings and the car's ongoing depreciation.

Step 6: If you must change vehicles

Sometimes keeping the car isn't practical. If you need to replace it, read trading in a car with negative equity first, and compare every offer on total amount financed and total cost.

If your payment is already a struggle

Contact your lender early. Many have hardship or deferral programs. Be cautious with options like surrender or voluntary repossession: they can damage your credit and still leave you owing a deficiency balance. A nonprofit credit counselor can help you weigh choices.
